Dr. L. Neil Odom practices obstetrics and gynecology and is affiliated with St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital. Dr. Odom grew up in Savannah, GA watching his father, an infertility specialist, help patients who found themselves facing what seemed like insurmountable odds. His father’s work instilled in him at a young age a deep desire to help those in need, especially those hoping to start a family.
To be able to do this, Dr. Odom received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Following that, he completed his residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. Dr. Odom later became board certified by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and an active member of several medical societies such as the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Georgia Composite Medical Board.
While receiving his education, Dr. Odom noticed something different about his medical interests compared to his father’s. Dr. Odom felt drawn to the full health journey of expecting mothers and babies-to-be, rather than just the fertility and conception process. Because of this, he opted for obstetrics and gynecology rather than becoming an infertility specialist.
“Being a gynecologist offers a rare experience unmatched in most other medical professions,” Dr. Odom explained. “I get to build a relationship with my patients—a mother and a baby—during pivotal moments in their lives. It’s so rewarding to be a part of that journey with them.”
Dr. Odom also loves the surgical aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. He loves that gynecologists were pioneers in laparoscopy, something that he thoroughly enjoys doing. He finds it riveting to work with a piece of equipment that was originally thought of by people before him in the same medical professional.
“But my favorite thing about this line of work is getting to be with the patients, especially when I see just how happy mom and baby are at the end of it,” Dr. Odom said.
Outside of the office, Dr. Odom has two children who keep him busy. Aside from spending time with them and his wife, he loves to run and fish.
